Our arsenal
Gods have their own unique ways of announcing their entry into our households. All heads of state have their own prestigious favorite vehicles (Read Air Force One, etc.), so why should the Gods miss out on the fun? Just a few days ago, the news media were abuzz with a trivia about the President of Russia. We are told that a convoy of his version of Air Force One travels with him. No prize for guessing, but for any enemy country with an ulterior motive, it would be impossible to guess which aircraft he is travelling in.
For now, let me turn my attention to the whimsical ways of our Gods. Our preference for living on the first floor of a high-rise apartment building does not guarantee protection against pests entering from the ground floor.
But this was no ordinary living being. He is the blessed vehicle for our venerated Ganesh Bhagwan. Perhaps God used His extraordinary divine powers to enter our otherwise well-guarded apartment on the first floor. We found some bananas scraped off and some raw potatoes — same as before. There were other telltale signs of the Mooshak’s presence, like — you know what I mean!
It was time to declare an official war! We quickly armed ourselves with a mousetrap and very thoughtfully shoved a piece of irresistible banana in it. The mooshak would have nothing to do with it.
The next night, we set up another gruesome device to trap him, alongside the mousetrap. But this was no ordinary mooshak! He skillfully picked up the banana piece by climbing over the mousetrap and using his tender body to grab it
Praying to Ganesh Bhagavan would be meaningless! Now what?
When one weapon doesn’t win the war, what do you do? Have another one of those ghastly devices. The next morning, we expected the mooshak to get stuck on at least one of the devices. I happened to watch him jump over both the devices safely into some crevice and disappear.
The next day, we set up a trap of a deadly poison skillfully smeared on the tip of a fresh, tempting carrot.
In Gujarati, they say’ જેને રામ રાખે એને કોણ ચાખે ?’ (No one can hurt someone if he is blessed by the God)
The mooshak would have nothing to do with it. He may have been on a fast, or the Bhagvan warned him and asked him to get lost, which he did. He was nowhere to be found!
We gave up, and so did the mooshak. That is the whole story.
After a couple of days, as we were watching one of those nonsensical serials at night, we heard a mysterious knocking noise on our glass window. Alarmed, we hurried to check who or what was outside. Sure enough, there was no one there!
The mystery of how he entered and escaped remains unresolved.
Jay Ganesh!
